Cloud Strife

Cloud Strife

Concept and creation

Cloud was designed by Tetsuya Nomura with influences from Yoshinori Kitase, Kazushige Nojima and Hironobu Sakaguchi. Originally conceptualized by Sakaguchi as one of only three playable characters in early planning stages for Final Fantasy VII, Cloud’s character saw greater oversight by Nomura than with other characters in previous Final Fantasy projects. Nomura has said the original parameters of Cloud’s character design called for slicked-back, black hair with no spikes. This depiction was to serve as a contrast to the long, flowing silver hair of the game’s lead antagonist, Sephiroth. However, to make Cloud stand out more and emphasize his role in the game as the lead protagonist, Nomura altered Cloud’s design to give him spiky, bright, blond hair. Furthermore, Nomura was called upon to supervise Cloud’s various lines and personality traits. Kitase and Nojima, meanwhile, were in charge of developing Cloud’s background and his relationship with the character of Sephiroth. Cloud’s weapon, the Buster Sword, was originally smaller from its final form in the game, but its height increased as Nomura redesigned Cloud. Kitase said of the character:

There wasn’t really much controversy or criticism about having him as the hero from within Square, but he is definitely a mysterious character. That’s one of the game’s main themes, the fact that the protagonist has all these secrets to unravel. He isn’t a straightforward hero like Superman; rather, he has lots of mysteries, self-doubts, and a real dark side. Mr. Nomura was also very good at designing a character like that.

oshinori Kitase , Electronic Gaming Monthly, October 2005

Nojima has expressed the dynamic of the relationship between the player and the main character in a Final Fantasy title is something he always puts thought into, and with Final Fantasy VII, Cloud’s subdued nature led him to write scenes with the character in such a way that the players would be placed in the position of deciding for themselves what the character was thinking. Nomura believes that the reason why Cloud has become popular within gamers is due to the impact from his personality made in Nojima’s scenario.

For Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, Nomura agreed to direct the project, largely in part because of his attachment to the character of Cloud. Nomura, on explaining Cloud’s situation in the film, said that “Cloud tried to lead his life positively after the end of FF7 but he cracked…The sin which Cloud thinks he owns is not anyone’s fault in particular. It is something Cloud has to overcome by himself.” Nojima said that the theme of the story is one of redemption. “If you want to be forgiven, you have to take the hard path in life.” Cloud, in choosing to fight against Sephiroth once again, is finally “given healing and forgiveness.” Nomura concluded, “Cloud seems to be a weak guy. Generally, heroes are strong, cool and don’t have any weaknesses…Although Cloud is a jerk sometimes, he is really human-like. It’s through redemption from his friends and having children to protect that he becomes stronger.” Cloud’s design in the film is a combination of a total of 8 designs the staff made which were from deformed to realistic designs. In contrast to his hair, Cloud’s clothes were difficult to make in the film.

Cloud’s Japanese voice actor, Takahiro Sakurai, first voiced his character in Kingdom Hearts with the idea that Cloud was a different character from the one of Final Fantasy VII, game which he was a fan of. For Advent Children Nomura wanted Cloud and Vincent’s voices to contrast with each other due to their similarities. Sakurai expressed pressure for voicing Cloud as it was the sequel from the Final Fantasy VII. Although he did not mind whether critical response regarding his work was positive or not, Sakurai claims that he only received praise. When voicing him, Sakurai has in mind that his silence is more expressive than his dialogues and that due to his burdens, he notes that Cloud is shown to be a weak person. For Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Cloud was noted by Sakurai to be more normal as well as more expressive. The final scene in which Cloud screams over Zack Fair’s death was the one in which Sakurai worked the most as it left the biggest impression on him. Sakurai has come to regard Cloud as very important character as it reminds him of his past and he is still impressed that he voiced him as he was fan of Final Fantasy VII.

Appearances

Final Fantasy VII

In Final Fantasy VII, Cloud is introduced as a mercenary and former member of SOLDIER, 1st Class, an elite military unit operating under the Shinra Company. Presented at the game’s start as apathetic to anything unrelated to his job, Cloud’s blas attitude towards the goals of AVALANCHE, a resistance group fighting against Shinra, and the threat posed to the planet causes conflict with the other characters, and his background produces misgivings as to Cloud’s motivations and trustworthiness. Cloud, meanwhile, takes pride in his past, confident in his abilities as a “former member of SOLDIER.” Despite appearing detached to members of AVALANCHE in the game’s introductory sequence, Cloud does display moments of camaraderie, some depending on the player’s choices. When confronted by his childhood friend and AVALANCHE member, Tifa, Cloud agrees to keep his boyhood promise to protect her, continuing his AVALANCHE membership despite never having become a famous hero. Following the player’s departure from Midgar, Cloud is appointed group leader by the other members of the party, much to the chagrin of Barret, AVALANCHE’s original leader.

In interacting with Aerith, a flower girl wanted by Shinra and sole survivor of an ancient race known as the Cetra, Cloud’s character is further expanded upon. He shows increased signs of good-natured humor and protectiveness, as opposed to his antagonistic use of sarcasm with Barret or comparative coolness to everyone other than Tifa that he has previously spoken with. Aerith, in turn, reciprocates this attitude, offering her assistance to lead Cloud back to Sector 7 and to rescue Tifa in Sector 6, despite Cloud being her bodyguard and the danger present. Aerith also inquires about Cloud’s romantic life, and, depending on the player’s dialogue choices and actions, could be one of several characters to take Cloud on a “date” at the Golden Saucer, an enormous amusement park, along with Tifa, and less seriously, Barret and optional character Yuffie. This love triangle aspect between Cloud, Tifa and Aerith is primarily focused on in the first disc, and at times is used to humorous effect.

When the player arrives at the inn in the town of Kalm, Cloud narrates to the group his history with Sephiroth, a legendary member of SOLDIER and the game’s primary antagonist. According to Cloud, the two were “war buddies,” having worked together on previous missions prior to the one in Nibelheim. Having joined SOLDIER to emulate Sephiroth, Cloud states in the flashback that he signs up for “big missions” whenever they become available, as the war had already ended and thus his chances for fame. When Sephiroth, upon discovering documents surrounding the nature of Jenova and his birth, mistakes himself to be a Cetra and razes Nibelheim, Cloud chases after him. Finding Tifa wounded by Sephiroth at the Mt. Nibel Mako Reactor, Cloud discovers Sephiroth releasing Jenova, an extraterrestrial life-form and Sephiroth’s “mother,” from imprisonment. Cloud relates to the group that he then confronted Sephiroth, although he is unable to remember the events directly following.

In fact, these events did not occur as Cloud describes; rather, they are an amalgamation of Cloud’s actual past (as a member of the Shinra army who failed to enter SOLDIER) along with his friend Zack’s own past, mixed with memories gleaned from Tifa’s mind, created out of a combination of shame, Jenova cells and manipulation by Sephiroth. The effects of this self-fabrication are made noticeable to the player prior to Cloud’s discovery of the truthloud, at mention of names from the past or moments related thereto, will experience a brief flashback and collapse momentarily, suffering from apparent physical pain, and visual and audio cues are given to indicate discrepancies. It is not until after he and Tifa fall into the Lifestream that he, with her encouragement can piece his past back together, and restore his own personality from underneath the amalgam where he had subconsciously hidden it, and dismisses Sephiroth’s deceit that he is an artificially-constructed Sephiroth-clone.

Compilation of Final Fantasy VII

Cloud’s design in Final Fantasy VII Advent Children was one of the most difficult to make by the staff as they wanted it to look realistic.

In the cell phone game Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII, Cloud appears in a minor role. During the course of the game, which takes place over the six years leading into Final Fantasy VII, the player encounters Cloud while he is serving under Zack and Sephiroth’s command.

In the CGI film Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, Cloud, two years following the conclusion of Final Fantasy VII, lives with Tifa in the city of Edge, working as a courier for the “Strife Delivery Service” that Tifa set up in her new bar, having given up his life as a mercenary. Staying with them is Marlene, Barret’s adopted daughter, and Denzel, an orphan with a rampant and deadly disease called Geostigma. When confronted by Tifa following the disappearance of Denzel and Marlene, it is revealed that Cloud suffers from the effects of Geostigma, and he responds that he is unfit to protect his new family and other friends. However, when urged by Tifa to let go of the past, Cloud sets out for the Forgotten City in search for the children, and confronts Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo, genetic remnants of Sephiroth left behind before he could diffuse into the Lifestream completely. In confronting Kadaj, the battle takes them back to Aerith’s church, where the Lifestream-influenced water cures Cloud of his Geostigma. Kadaj later merges with the remnants of Jenova, causing Sephiroth to be reborn. When Sephiroth is once again defeated, he dissipates, leaving a dying Kadaj in his place. At the movie’s end, Cloud sees Aerith and Zack in the doorway of Aerith’s church, and assures them that he’ll be fine, as he isn’t alone anymore.

Cloud in Last Order: Final Fantasy VII

Cloud is also one of the main characters in Last Order: Final Fantasy VII. This OVA depicts Cloud in two events that were shown in flashbacks in Final Fantasy VII; one at Nibelheim when he fights Sephiroth, and the other while escaping from Shinra with Zack. In Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Cloud is presented as a young Shinra infantryman who befriends the SOLDIER Zack Fair. During the game’s conclusion, a dying Zack gives Cloud his Buster Sword, telling him that he is his legacy and that he must continue to live. After Zack dies, an emotionally-shattered Cloud departs for Midgar alone, and develops the Zack-based persona that he possesses for the majority of Final Fantasy VII.

Cloud appears in a small supporting role in Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. A year after the events of Advent Children, Cloud, working alongside Barrett and Tifa, lends his support to the ground forces of the World Regenesis Organization and Vincent in their siege of Midgar and counterattack against the rogue Shinra military unit, Deepground.

Other appearances

In Kingdom Hearts, Cloud is meant to have a “demon-like” appearance.

Cloud’s character has also appeared in games outside of the Final Fantasy VII continuity. He is one of several playable Final Fantasy VII characters in Itadaki Street Special for the PlayStation 2 and Itadaki Street Portable for the PlayStation Portable. In Chocobo Racing, Cloud is a hidden character that rides a motorcycle. Cloud is a playable character in the PlayStation version of Ehrgeiz, but like the other Final Fantasy VII characters present in the game, he has no storyline. Cloud and Tifa are the only Final Fantasy VII characters with a third costume or a story mode title; Cloud’s depicts him in his Shinra infantryman attire, and his title is ‘Guardian’.

In the PlayStation game Final Fantasy Tactics, Cloud is a playable secret character the player is able to recruit. He is accidentally pulled into the world of Ivalice by an ancient machine called “the Celestial Globe,” which was activated by Ramza Beoulve in Goug Machine City. Cloud is disoriented after arriving in Ramza’s world, and after a short exchange with Ramza and the others, he leaves. He wanders into Zarghidas Trade City, where he encounters a flower girl named Aerith, and it is implied that she reminds Cloud of the Aerith in the original game, including his grief of her death. As Cloud is leaving the area, Aerith is accosted by a man demanding payment. Cloud returns to help Aerith escape as Ramza and his party catch up to him. After the battle, he joins Ramza’s party as a playable character, although he can’t perform any of his signature attacks until the player tracks down his Materia blade.

In Kingdom Hearts, Cloud appears in the Olympus Coliseum world. He is depicted with a claw and a crimson cape, and the blade of his sword is wrapped in bandages. Nomura has stated that Cloud’s left arm was inspired by Vincent Valentine, noting that, in this game, the character was supposed to illustrate a “demon-like” appearance due to his ties to the “dark side.” He has been hired by Hades to kill Hercules, but must fight Sora as a prerequisite. After the fight, Hades sends Cerberus to attack Cloud and Sora, who are then saved by Hercules. Cloud meets with Sora afterward and explains that he is searching for someone. Aerith later tells Sora in Kingdom Hearts Final Mix that he’s looking for Sephiroth. Cloud appears later in the Coliseum’s battle tournaments. During the credit roll at the end of the game, Cloud is shown reuniting with Aerith and the other residents of Hollow Bastion in the library after Cid has located him and brought him home. Cloud continued his role in the series in the Game Boy Advance sequel Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories as a boss in the Olympus Coliseum and later as a summon card for Sora. However, this Cloud is based on Sora’s memory in this game. Cloud appears again in Kingdom Hearts II, depicted in his Advent Children attire. He is still searching for Sephiroth, asking for Sora’s help in order to do so while also warning Sora that Sephiroth will attempt to turn him to darkness, and is himself being sought out by Kingdom Hearts’s version of Tifa. Cloud fights alongside Leon during the Heartless invasion of Hollow Bastion, and later aids Sora. Should the player choose to engage Sephiroth and win the battle, Cloud returns and engages Sephiroth which ends with both of them disappearing in a flash of light after Tifa gives Cloud the light to overcome his darkness. Sora concludes that Cloud is still fighting with Sephiroth, and will not stop until he is defeated.

Cloud is the hero representing Final Fantasy VII in Dissidia: Final Fantasy, where he is, as in all his recent appearances, voiced by Takahiro Sakurai in the Japanese version and by Steve Burton in the English version. His fight against Sephiroth in such game was based on their fights from Final Fantasy VII and Advent Children.

Cultural impact

Critical reception

The character of Cloud has been overall well received by critics. IGN stated the character set a trend for role-playing game heroes. “The spiky blond hair and the gigantic Buster Sword have become instantly identifiable icons, recognized by gamers around the world.” GameDaily concurred, listing Cloud as an example of the “spiky-haired hero with a strange weapon”, though stating that they have no problem with Cloud’s spiky hair in particular. He was named best character of all time in Dengeki PlayStation’s retrospective awards feature about the original PlayStation. Electronic Gaming Monthly placed him seventh in their “Top Ten: List of Videogame Characters.” UGO placed him at the top on their list of “Top 25 Japanese RPG Characters”. IGN placed him third in its “Top 25 Final Fantasy Characters” feature. He had the same rank in IGN’s “Final Fantasy VII: Top 10 Characters”. GameCritics leveled criticism against the character, stating that, while Final Fantasy VII had “some of the most complex characters ever created, by video game standards,” the character was nevertheless “paper-thin” with “childish motivations” when compared to characters from “Citizen Kane or the complexities of characters exhibited in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver.” Mania Entertainment writer Briana Lawerence listed Cloud 2nd in the article “10 Male Headaches of Anime” criticizing his feeling of guilt about Aerith’s death. On the other hand, Edge described Cloud as an example of “excellent design and characterization.” They also commented that his design “inspired many a Japanese teen to adopt his exact spiky, yellow hairstyle.” His development in Advent Children was praised by Todd Douglass Jr. from DVD Talk as one of the best parts from the film. Famitsu issue #1103 featured Cloud on its cover and gave him a seven-page tribute, showing his many appearances through the years.

Reception among fans has been predominately positive. According to IGN, “he is probably the most famous hero in the history of the Final Fantasy series,” and that, although “his star has faded somewhat over the last decade and change, maybe it’s just a consequence of overexposure,” and “he’ll probably still be an icon ten years from now.” IGN listed him as a possible character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, though he was not chosen as the “reader’s choice.” In one of IGN’s 2007 “Hero Showdowns,” Cloud was pitted against Link, though Link was voted the favorite. The character was placed in similar contests by GameFAQs, winning the “Character Battle II” (2003) and finishing second in the “Character Battle III” (2004) and the “Battle Royale” (2006). GameSpot featured him in their poll “All Time Greatest Game Hero”. In an Oricon poll from 2008, Cloud was voted as the 2nd most popular video game character. He was also 2nd in men’s category and 3rd in women’s category. Cloud has also been included in some unorthodox lists; these include IGN’s “Worst Videogame Haircuts”, “Top Videogame Sword Masters” and ScrewAttack’s “Top Ten Coolest Characters”. Arnold Katayev from PSXextreme praise Cloud’s redesign from Kingdom Hearts as one of best ones from the game, noting how it is a “hybrid” of his and Vincent Valentine’s designs.

Merchandise

Cloud has served extensively as a basis for a variety of merchandise, including figurines and jewelry. Kanji Tashiro, Square Enix’s manager of merchandise, said at the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con that Cloud’s likeness has produced some of the company’s best-selling items, and said that fans could look forward to further adaptations of the character in the future. Popular models include Cloud’s Advent Children figurine and Hardy Daytona Bike set, having sold particularly well in European and North American markets.

To Cheat Or Not To Cheat With These Game Cheats

To Cheat Or Not To Cheat With These Game Cheats

Surely, you have played games you couldn’t win. However, you moved on. Game cheats are simply within your reach.

What Is Are Games Cheat?

Games cheats are processes, code tweaks, use of a program glitch, as well as a hack that provides players license to perform behavior that is not within the features of the game. How does a games cheat function? It manages to exploit a game’s susceptible architecture.

Why Cheat?

Power is what you garner from a games cheat. Probably with a few combinations of characters in your keyboard, you may increase “money” in your account or reload your ammunition. You may gather things that you know you still couldn’t get or afford. You could own another life even if you’ve utilized all or even kill an enemy with simplicity. When a challenge becomes very hard for you, you may always opt to proceed with no problem. It’s like exploring unknown areas of a specific game.

To Cheat or Not to Cheat?

There are no firm code of conduct followed against utilizing game cheats. Despite of the warning of game manufacturers, still, there are no rules adhered to. But everyone thinks that all use them; thus, there is no sense in banning them.

There are some serious players though who are tracking games cheats particularly those games that are vulnerable to them. The easiest variety of multiplayer game to control with a game cheat can be the “asynchronous peer-to-peer game.” This network architecture is one where a computer is responsible for defining a player’s character and its interaction with the rest of the world.

You Have Been Duped

One of the most well-known types of online games cheating is duping. How do other players dupe you? They steal an important item in your inventory then copy it. To do this, they should crash the system initially. Then they transfer this item to a co-conspirator. The collaborator then stores his character in a disk then logs off. Then, the cheater crashes the server before it could store any other character. By the time the server comes back to life, both cheater as well as accomplice will be proud holders of the item.

The Problem with Games Cheats

Cheating would always possess a different kind of influence, one of which is into virtual economy. It’s the balance of variables that defines the standards of the games. When this balance is changed, character growth as well as item acquisition lose their significance in the general game scheme.

Games cheats are plenty and you’re free to use them as long as they’re accessible. Yet bear in mind that making use of them just mean that you are not smart enough to conquer the game on your own.

Does The Mafia Run Online Sims?

Does The Mafia Run Online Sims?

If I asked you this, would you believe me? Try doing so, because it’s the truth. And also, in this strange and perverse world, young people are busy killing each other at an alarming rate. Do we really need something like a pseudo Mafia causing the same sorts of problems? Gangsterism, in other words, on our children’s beloved video games?

According to Wikipedia, the Web’s foremost online encyclopedia, ever since 9/11 the FBI hasn’t had much in time or resources to handle organized crime, and there has been a sudden resurgence in its activities.

Right now, the online game “The Sims Online”– which is labeled a “T for Teens” game — has been overrun by several obviously Mafia named “families.” These people don’t seem to have enough imagination to be Mexican Mafia, Chinese Mafia or Japanese Mafia (yet), which also exist in real life. They are very aggressive and very obvious.

Whether or not they are the real Mafia is a question which I cannot answer. They may be a bunch of “errant” teenage boys and girls – but ones with some very eclectic adult tastes and also many violent and weird high tech tendencies. You should see the Playboy style icons they paste on top of their houses from certain views of the TSO video game.

And one thing these kids, if they are kids, really do, even though it is to virtual and not real houses: they trash people’s paid-for beautiful properties. The kind of properties that people would like to build, taking a lifetime to achieve. Beautiful, sprawling mansions you can’t own in real life, the kind that are totally out of reach for the vast majority of people. And no one could tell if it was part of the game, or something far worse.

I am so tired, I don’t know. Values are very hard to gauge in life, anyway.

To “green up” on The Sims Online at all, or to keep your simulated character going, you must do interactions that are similar to having sex with animals (wrestle with your dog, but you should see what it looks like if you really see it) and that’s bad enough, but rather bearable. Sigmund Freud would have told us that such behavior is relatively normal, that having an “orgy session” involving “heavy petting” with your own puppy where it loves you and licks your face and you are all over each other, is fun. Also, there is sexy dancing, heavy kissing and hugging, and so forth, which works for most people — including twelve year old kids. This is done with your fellow “characters,” real life people in the game whom you can become acquainted with, work with, and even “marry.” The marriages are not legal of course, and tend to dissolve fairly quickly.

Meanwhile, your town is crawling with “De Corleoni Territori,” the “Italian Mafia Empire,” “The Vito Family Territory” and so forth. I am not talking Anti-Italian Defamation. I had several Italian friends on the game, whom I am now stuck missing in my daily life. I am talking about a bunch of people either acting like the Mafia, or worse yet, actually being connected with them somehow and taking over a children’s video game. Possibly, several children’s video games. Or were they involved in the first place, and is Maxis a Mafia held game company? Look at the names.

Maxis, Mafia. Why doesn’t Entertainment Arts do something about the house trashing problem, for example, even though people have repeatedly complained about it? What is it exactly that they are trying to hide? Apparently not much; you can easily find “the Mob” everywhere on that game. And their version of “the cops” does absolutely nothing at all. Meanwhile, I have talked to Maxis, and they have repeatedly claimed “we are taking care of the problem.”

The game is labeled “T for Teens” and is connected with what looks like some harmless fake gambling. The money being exchanged seems to be Simoleans at first. Fake money, which you get by working at odd jobs on the game, and you may also acquire skills so you can make more of the fake money. But there are “payoffs,” and you can also buy blocks of the money on EBay, roughly -25 for 1 million Simoleans. I heard of one lady who blew thousands of real life dollars on this. It’s possible that the teenagers who are playing it are making money from performing vaguely illicit “sexual acts” on this game – for real money.

Is this what you want your teenager to be doing? For 6-10 hours a day, five-seven days a week? Eventually, obviously, after I spent about a month on the game, it was so that the money was swiftly turning real.

Okay, video addiction is bad enough, but we’re talking about Organized Crime here as well. Remember a little place called Columbine High School? What if there’s some sort of eerie connection to that sort of business? I had to join this game to find out, kind of as a lark, but I did some real exploring too.

And the Mafia is in and roughly controlling every town that I’ve visited on The Sims Online, and I’ve reasonably checked them all over. Dan’s Grove, Jolly Pines, Blazing Falls, Alphaville. The Mafia is…everywhere.

I have talked to these “Mafia” gentlemen and ladies, and visited their houses. They don’t have very much to do at them but the usual Sims stuff. I’m afraid they have discovered game “cheats” and, being bored, are using them to destroy other game players’ properties. And yes, I have evidence, not hard unfortunately, that they have watched people play the game from a distance. One of them knew about something he shouldn’t have known. And another friend of mine who regularly plays video games has noticed these tendencies toward having strange “game powers” that other players don’t have in yet other video games. He says it’s pretty common. Hackers, he calls it, but in the TSO case, it’s hitting a little too close to home.

For example, a gay bashing was set up right in front of me. I rode it out, but I had to comfort the “gay” being bashed. Of course, it was his simulated character, not “he” who was hurt. TSO is real people playing games. I’m not gay, but it was getting a little peculiar that such stuff is allowable on a “T for Teens” video game. I was more than a little confused.

A “lady” in fun fired a game Civil War cannon at me, in private, and this Mafia guy named “Riccardo” knew that it had happened. I don’t think she told him about it. How did he know? She did it just for laughs, and it was a harmless game event (I peed my pants as the game character, and it seemed okay), but it’s not very funny that he knew about it. I didn’t exactly care, and it was sort of humorous. He couldn’t have known about it unless he’d seen it happen, in all probability. And he wasn’t anywhere on the property or onscreen at the time. He had a private view of it going on.

The same Mafia dude, who kept denying he was Mafia — while dressed in an obvious game-style Mafia suit and with the name “Riccardo” — also told me you can’t trash houses unless you’re a roommate or the home owner. This should indeed be the case; it involves “building permissions.” But one of the house trashing victims had no roommates whatsoever. And she wasn’t motivated to trash her house…no insurance money is involved.

Game players on this game can be quite friendly. I made a lot of good friends doing things like making pizzas, opening up my own skills house business, doing minor gambling (legal for adults and I’m over 40) and in general — partying. You can play high tech, beautiful looking musical instruments and feel like you’re there. It’s a great game. You should see some of the wild and crazy characters on this game! Or should you?

Except that I can’t play it anymore. I quit the game solely because of the
extremely heavy Mafia presence that was starting to visit my house and breathe hotly down my neck. That, and the game was cutting into my work routine as a full-time writer quite a little bit, too.

First, “Riccardo” showed up. Out of nowhere, after I had used the Maxis device to screen all apparent “Mafia” members out of my “house.” He showed up at my house. The same day my friend’s house was trashed. It was the second such trashing since I had started playing there. Obvious Mafia guy, obviously scouting me. Denied everything completely. This was after two of my friends’ houses had been trashed.

Want to know anything about terrorism? Now I know what it is. A little too thoroughly for my tastes. The Mob was making it obvious that I could be next. Why is that exactly? And what sort of “next” would it be-real, or simulated game activity? These people looked capable of tracking down my actual computer’s IP address, my ISP — and finally, my real life house.

And all I could do was flee. I quit playing the game for good. I don’t feel much like a serious game player after that. I feel rather like an inebriated cipher.

“Yeah, they’re just a bunch of teenagers who like to trash houses…” “They’re not the real Mafia, they’re just kids.” I heard a lot of that from people both on and off the game, even my fellow writers. Harmless kids.

Like the ones at Columbine? That bunch even called themselves “The Trench Coat Mafia.” What’s with this strange fascination of teenage kids with the Mob? Does gangsta rap, or something even worse, have anything to do with it?

The Sims Online is conceivably the haven for a slinking beast with no better name than the Neo Mafia: “My New Family.” And for the last time, if you’re Italian, I am not picking on you. I’m worried about you instead. And do you need to be affiliated with these mysterious strangers, who maybe think all organized crime is still from Italy? Are you, like me, a parent? Ma fia? Neo ma fia…

Yes, parents, that is what it means in Italian-American. My new family. Still feel comfortable with the concept?

“Trust me. I’m only Italian. I’m not a Mafia member. You must be a bigot. It’s because my skin is brown. Yadayadayaday.” You can be whatever skin color you want to be on TSO, and either sex for that matter. Everybody kept going, “It’s only kids, calm down, and it’s only kids.” Yeah, pretty old kids.

Maybe I was a fool for ever playing that game. I assumed it was just a game, and someone was being silly about the Mafia on it. Later, I found a very professional looking website dedicated to The Sims Mafia. “Don’t enter here if you’re under thirteen” is a quote from it. Maxis is doing nothing whatsoever to stop these people, which is getting to be sickeningly obvious.

I’m sure that if this story is ever widely promoted, people will join The Sims Online (TSO) after having read it. It’s an extremely download, a free two week trial, per month and bam, you’re in it. News items like the War belittle this pretty much. But that’s somebody else’s problem. The Federal Bureau of Investigation should be looking into at least our nation’s video games. You can buy money on EBay to sell on that TSO game, kids are on that game, and they are being threatened into being recruited into the, I would assume, mostly “swarthy white people Mafia”…right now…since they keep mentioning the Italian one so much…

…the real one or the virtual one?

Who knows?

The Benefits Of Gaming

The Benefits Of Gaming

Gaming is popular with teenagers, women, children, as well as men. Older people say they play games as it alleviates loneliness and puts them in contact with others. Statistics reveal that 41% of gamers are women and more than 43 % gamers are aged 25-49. And, research predicts that the games market in 2005 will be US$ 29 billion.

Players can choose between stored games and online games. Stored games are played on consoles while online games are played on a computer using either a broadband or dial up Internet connection. The growth in online gaming according to IDC, a research firm, is set to touch 256 million users by 2008. And, that gaming is serious business is conformed by the hosting of international conferences devoted to gaming and the formation of “Casual Games Special Interest Group.”

Gaming captures the imagination of the players and uses the senses: sight, sound, as well as touch. Many need the use of intelligence as well as strategy. Complex graphics, colors, high quality virtual realities are all set to grab as well as hold the attention of players. Multi-player gaming takes the interest to the next level -offers challenges as well as new horizons to be conquered.

Games played on the Internet are such that clever participants find ways to push the game beyond its visible limits, one can even device cheats to circumvent problems posed by the game. Games test the skills, intelligence, concentration ability as well as techie know how.

Online gaming architecture has six business aspects: the subscriber; the advertiser; the gaming platform provider; the broadband service provider; the network service provider; and the gaming content provider. It is big business-hardware revenues in 2005 are expected to be: US$ 9.4 billion with software and content revenue touching US.9 billion.

However, there is a downside, gaming can become addicted and affect normal life-kids stop studying, housewives neglect their daily routine, and people are tempted to play games even at work. It can lead to suicides, mental imbalance as well as destroy marriages and careers. Gamers become recluses and rarely make social contact outside their gaming groups.

Addiction studies indicate that gaming can result in: obsession, neglect, lying, socially unacceptable behaviors, carpal tunnel syndrome, dry eyes, neglect of personal hygiene, as well as sleep disorders.

Popular gaming sites include: MSN games which has 3.4 million monthly registered users ; Pogo which  has 8.6 million monthly registered users; and Yahoo games which has 10.1 million registered monthly users.

Analysts predict that by 2007 online gaming will be at least 285 petabits a month, the revenue generated by online subscriptions for gaming is expected to reach US$ 650 million annually.

The future according to Peter Molyneux, is in developing games that “reward a player for “out of the box” thinking and creativity. Games must encourage players to be interactive and decide the direction the game will take.

The Console Versus PC Gaming Battle

In the world of gaming, some of us like to think that PC gamers rule the roost. Others, however, are die hard console gamers. Some walk the line and play both. So, o they have the staying power? Is one type destined to become obsolete?

First of all, in the world of console gaming, there are three main categories, these days, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or Wii gamers. Granted, some play two types and some play all three. Personally, I am a Nintendo fiend, though.

In some ways, that competition actually works in the console gamers’ favor. Since there are three main console games, there are three very distinctive console game sets to choose from. Yet, those sets are ever changing.

For example, I loved Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie on N64. Imagine my dismay when I discovered that the latest Banjo game is only out on Xbox 360! Suddenly, they aren’t Nintendo specific games anymore! So, now, if I want to play my favorite games, I have to buy a 360. Theoretically, once I do that, I will see other 360 games that I like and buy those. I’m probably not alone. That trend will probably cause a lot of you gamers out there to buy more than one system and, as a result, games for more than one system.

So, any old school console gamers are probably going to stay console gamers and, by default, their kids will probably be console gamers, since the games will be in the house. I don’t see console games ever dying. So, are computer games destined to go by the wayside, instead?

Well, I think not, just for sheer convenience. Most of us use our computers on a daily basis. If we have breaks from work or just happen to be online chatting with friends, why not play a game, especially a multiplayer online game? In fact, more and more MMORPG’s are popping up. World of Warcraft, Warhammer and the like are in no danger of dying off.

Aside from that sort of convenience, there’s also the space convenience. If you play computer games, you don’t have to contend with console game systems, lots of game controllers and accessories and tons of game discs and cases everywhere. A lot of computer games don’t even require a disc to run.

Then there’s convenience point three. If you’re already at your computer playing a game you have the world at your fingertips, as far as finding game information goes. You can easily look up game cheats, game walkthroughs, game trailers and more. Of course, if you are playing a console game, you can take time out and go over to your computer and look up the cheat codes, but it takes more time.

Ultimately, there are no winners or losers in the battle between console and PC. I am looking forward to Diablo III coming out for PC, personally, but I’m also looking forward to the day that I can replace the Wii that my ex boyfriend kept, too! There’s no reason we should choose one over the other. All games are a blast!

I have been writing articles for a living on a variety of subjects for about 4 years now. I enjoy writing articles on health topics, pets and video games most. I also hope to get into book writing soon.

VGM – Recensione THE MOVIES (Activision / Lionhead Studios – PC – 2005) Parte 2/2
